Every Day A New Opportunity...

The Bright Side Opportunities Center, a service organization and facility operated by the Bright Side Opportunities Corporation, traces its roots back to the mission of the Bright Side Baptist Church. Emerging from the church's commitment to community service and family well-being, the vision for the Opportunities Corporation arose as the church embarked on constructing a new edifice at Hershey Avenue and Wabank Street in Southwest Lancaster. The goal was clear: to provide a safe haven and expanded services for the surrounding community.

In response to the contemporary challenges faced by many communities, Bright Side recognized a social responsibility to not only uphold positive community aspects but also to strengthen areas in need of improvement. The ethos of the church emphasized partnership over individual action, advocating for empowerment rather than charity.

During the planning phase for its relocation to the southwest, church leaders conducted a comprehensive needs assessment, engaging with various stakeholders, including city officials, school districts, law enforcement, social service providers, and residents. This process highlighted the demand for a facility offering multiple services under one roof, leading to the formation of a separate 501c3 corporation and the establishment of the Bright Side Opportunities Center.

Funding the construction of the new facility necessitated a community capital campaign independent of the church. Thanks to the generosity of the Lancaster community, the Opportunities Center opened its doors in November 2004, committed to serving all individuals regardless of their economic status or religious affiliation.

Over the years, the Center, affectionately known as BSOC, has collaborated with other organizations to provide a diverse range of services. These include daily mentoring for troubled youth through The Academy, a federally qualified health clinic operated by Union Community, English classes and support services for Afghan refugees offered by The Haven, and vocational rehabilitation services provided by the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation (OVR).

BSOC's commitment to youth development is evident through programs such as STEM initiatives, fitness programs with state-of-the-art equipment and certified trainers, and a variety of group classes catering to different interests.

Beyond its programs, BSOC offers rental spaces including a youth center, gymnasium, banquet hall, cultural center, conference room, and classrooms, making it a versatile hub for community activities.

In the words of many, the Bright Side Opportunities Center stands as a hidden gem in Lancaster City, offering boundless opportunities for all.
